Nose Breathing
How and why to do it
There are so many good reasons to breathe through the nose instead of the mouth, more than I will go into here. But here is a quick overview:
Why we should nose breathe
Nose breathing produces far more nitric oxide, which improves oxygen circulation.
Some belief systems say mouth breathing invites demons to enter.
Others believe mouth breathing is a major cause of illness.
We tend to associate mouth breathing (slack jaw) with stupidity.
How to nose breathe
Bring awareness to how much you mouth breathe by placing a small piece of Sellotape on the centre of your mouth for a couple of hours.
If you are uncomfortable with the toxic glue, put a wet piece of paper there instead.
You can also do this overnight, although this may not work with the paper.
This exercise will also bring awareness to how often you speak. You may also set a timer for five minutes and simply breathe in and out through your nose.
‘Breath' by James Nestor is a good book on this subject if you’d like to learn more.
